Cylinder bed machines

Cylinder bed machines

Industrial machines with a cylinder bed for sewing tubular garments and curved areas.

What is a cylinder bed machine?

Cylinder bed machines are designed for sewing tubular items such as trousers, sleeves, boots and footwear. Their horizontal arm gives complete freedom on circular seams and curves that would be impossible on a flatbed machine.

What a cylinder bed machine is and what it is used for

The arm of these machines is a narrow horizontal cylinder instead of a flat bed. The piece slides over it like a sleeve, which lets you sew round pieces that are already closed, without forcing or opening them.

Tubular products. Sleeves, trouser legs, cuffs, covers, technical fabric tubes and any circular seam. This is why this machine family exists.

Footwear and leather goods. Together with post bed machines, it is the usual pair in the industry. The cylinder goes inside the piece; the post reaches it from above.

Thick and technical materials. Most models in this family have compound feed, designed for leather, canvas and technical fabrics where the material tends to slip.

Repairs and made-to-measure work. Because you don't have to unpick the piece, the cylinder bed is the natural tool for alterations, adjustments and short runs.

How to choose a cylinder bed machine

Measure the inside diameter of your piece. It is the first filter and the one most people overlook. If the arm doesn't fit inside, the rest of the specifications don't matter.

Horizontal or vertical hook. It changes the thread path and access for maintenance. Models in the same family usually offer both configurations, and the choice depends on the type of seam and the thread you use.

Basic or electronic functions. Eco versions have manual backtack and presser foot lift; electronic versions add thread trimming, automatic backtack and needle positioning. On long runs, those automatic functions pay for themselves.

One or two needles. Two needles for parallel stitching on closed pieces; one needle for free seams and tight curves.

The thread decides. If you work with heavy thread sizes, check the clearance under the presser foot and the hook size before deciding. A small hook means changing the bobbin all the time.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a cylinder bed and a post bed? The orientation. The cylinder is horizontal and the piece slides over it, ideal for tubular work. The post is vertical and gives access from above to bulky pieces that are already assembled.

Can I sew flat pieces on a cylinder bed? Yes, but without side support the piece is less stable and long seams come out worse. For flat work, a flatbed machine.

Which version suits me, Eco or electronic? If your production is short, varied runs, the Eco does the job. If you repeat the same seam many times a day, thread trimming and automatic backtacking change the time per piece.

Do you have spare parts? Yes, in the spare parts section you will find needles, hooks, bobbins and wear parts for the brands we work with.

How do I know which model I need? With the piece in front of us. Tell us what you sew, with which material and in what volume, and we will tell you which configuration fits.

Not sure whether you need a flatbed, post bed or cylinder bed? We explain it in Flatbed, post bed or cylinder bed: which machine you need.
