Special automotive applications: airbags, seat belts, steering wheels and soft tops
The pieces where the seam has a function that isn’t aesthetic: making the airbag open where it should, the seat belt hold, the steering wheel feel perfect to the touch and the soft top or tarpaulin keep the water out.
On these pieces the topstitching isn’t judged by how good it looks but by what it does: withstand a load, tear in exactly the right place or keep water out. That changes the machine: fewer general-purpose flatbeds and more programmed sewing, heavy-duty machines and, for tarpaulins, welding instead of sewing.
Airbags: programmed, repeatable sewing
An airbag cushion is sewn with closed patterns that have to come out identical piece after piece: same geometry, same stitches per centimetre, same thread. It is work for a pattern sewer, not for an operator: PFAFF 3590 Portal and Brother BAS-375H for large format, Dürkopp Adler 911 (you can see it working in this video) y JUKI PLK-J10050RH. For airbags the end customer usually requires process control, so it is worth discussing traceability and parameters before choosing.
Related: on seat covers with a side airbag, the seam the airbag deploys through is sewn with thread and parameters defined by the manufacturer. If that is your case, tell us the specification.
Seat belts, harnesses and anchorages
The polyester webbing of the seat belt is closed at the anchorage with a stitch pattern (typically a rectangle with a cross) in heavy thread, which is what bears the load. It is sewn on a heavy-duty version of a pattern sewer: JUKI PLK-J4040RH, with a 400 × 400 mm sewing area and extra presser foot lift. For very thick webbing and straps on industrial vehicles, the extra-heavy Dürkopp Adler H 967 with Barrel XL hook.
Steering wheels and knobs
On a leather steering wheel, the machine joins the pieces of the cover (often plain and perforated) and does the decorative topstitching; the final closing over the rim is often sewn by hand. They are small, curved pieces, so they are worked on the Dürkopp Adler 888-1 post bed or the DA 69-373 cylinder bed, with the PFAFF 1245 for flat joining.
Soft tops, tarpaulins and industrial vehicles
Convertible soft tops: multi-layer canvas and long visible seams, with heavy-duty compound feed (JUKI LU-2810, LU-2860 with two needles) or Dürkopp Adler H 867 when the thickness goes up. Truck tarpaulins and PVC curtain sides: here it almost always pays to weld instead of sew, because every stitch is a hole in a tarpaulin that has to be watertight; see the welding machines and sew or weld: when it pays to change. Motorhomes, buses and industrial vehicles: upholstery and covers with the same criteria as seats and interior, usually in heavier material.

This is guidance: on safety parts, your customer’s specification takes precedence over any table.
Frequently asked questions
Can I sew a seat belt or anchorage on a heavy-duty flatbed? For prototypes or repairs it may do. In production, a load pattern sewn by hand is never repeated exactly the same twice; the automatic unit does repeat it, and that is what gets audited.
What sewing field do I need for airbags? It depends on the size of the deployed cushion. With the drawing of the piece we will tell you which automatic unit covers it.
Soft top: sew or weld? A textile soft top is sewn and the seam waterproofed; PVC tarpaulin is welded. If you are unsure about a material, send us a sample.
Can you advise me without visiting you? Yes. Tell us the piece, material, thread and production volume, and if there is a customer specification, even better.
Tell us about your application
We analyse the piece, material and customer requirements before recommending anything. Request technical advice.
Other applications: seats · vehicle interior · all automotive machinery.
Do you have a specific seat, panel or interior piece? Send us your case with photos of the material and the seam, and we will tell you which machine fits.
